Press Release

YANMAR Racing finished 4th place in Monsoon Cup

It’s a sunny morning here in Kuala Terengganu. Completely different from the long rainy week we’ve had since our arrival. There are occasional rain clouds passing on the course, but it’s not the heavy rainfall that blocked our visibility for the last few days. Wishing for the good weather to last throughout the day.

Today is the last day of the Monsoon Cup. Finals and Petit Final will be held on the water. YANMAR Racing had lost the Semi Finals yesterday with the score of 2wins and 3losses. Today we will compete against Jesper Radich for the 3rd and 4th place.

Fine weather is also bringing in 8-10 knots of great sailing breeze onto the racing course. With the water current strong on the right hand side of the course, it is vital for a perfect start. For the first race, YANMAR Racing decides to go for the left hand side of the course, to take advantage of the flow from the right hand side. Unfortunately the right hand flow fell short of our expectation and our opponent beat us.

We start on port, starboard for the 2nd race and the opponent receives a penalty. The usual case for the penalty that was given to our opponent would have been a red flag penalty, where the receiving team would have to get rid of it right away. But today, the umpires decided to give them a regular penalty. Both teams sailed on the right hand side of the course. At the start the opponent had about 2 boat length lead on us, but they kept advancing further away in the race. This year at the Monsoon Cup, every time the opponent takes the right hand side of the course we seem to have lost that race. It is unfortunate, but we have lost the Petit Final with a score of 0 wins and 2 losses. Our final result for the Monsoon Cup is 4th place.

For the Finals, Ian Williams beat Johnie Berntsson with 3 wins and 1 loss. Ian’s team also became the Tour Champion of 2011.

YANMAR Racing went into the very last race of the season with focus and determination, but at the end our final result was 4th place in the Monsoon Cup. The crew of YANMAR Racing will take every bit of frustration back home with them and will look back at this season’s scores.

This will be the last news release for the Monsoon Cup. Thank You for all the cheers and kind words you have sent to YANMAR Racing during the event.
