World Match Racing Tour (WMRT)

The World Match Racing Tour is the leading professional sailing series featuring 10 World Championship events across the globe. It is also one of only three events sanctioned by the international Sailing Federation (ISAF) with "Special Event" status alongside Americas Cup and Volvo Ocean Race.

Events utilize the same "match race" format used in the America's Cup with racing taking place in identically supplied racing yachts which places a focus on team work and skill. Racing takes place close to the shore for the general public to follow the races as virtual on-the-water stadiums.

Media and television highlights coverage reaches over 600 million households in excess of 90 countries around the world The World Match Tour comprises 10 events in specially selected locations around the world. As the leading professional sailing series in the world, the Tour events are recognized as must-attend regattas on the match-race circuit.

What is Match Racing?

Match Racing is considered by many as the most fascinating way of sailing, both for the actors and for the spectators. Unlike fleet racing, where each competitor sails against the entire fleet, Match Racing is made of duels. During the Round Robins, each skipper has to compete at least once against all other competitors. Once the Round Robins are over the top ranked sailors compete in the quarter, semi-finals and finals which take place on a "dead or alive" basis. Match Racing is an extremely technical discipline. The pre-starts, the racing rules and the boat handling are elements which in the end make the difference.
